This paper follows this third line of thought of reconciliation. As Sheredos argued, an OC-EC reconciliation can be framed in terms of norms and constraints on explanatory power. Sheredos takes Illari’s and Craver’s reconciliation argument as too strong and shows that epistemic and ontic norms cannot be fulfilled simultaneously. This paper offers another framework in which reconciliation is possible and argues for the coexistence and interdependence of epistemic and ontic types of explanation. It introduces the idea of “epistemic environments” in which activities such as: (i) knowledge-production, (ii) problem-solving and (iii) norm-generation, depend on both OC and EC explanations. In the present account, we need to focus on the outcome of successful explanation as a function operating on epistemic environments. We take computer simulations and more recently machine learning algorithms as methodological tools used to solve problems in science and to expand our knowledge about possible interventions. To relate scientific progress to computational science and its advancement, we need to clarify a S, the standard of improvement. In the functionalist approach, S is more or less a function, typically a problem-solving function. Progress is obtained when this function is fulfilled (Laudan 1978; Shan 2019). In the epistemic approach, progress is defined as the accumulation of scientific knowledge (Bird 2008). In the present approach, we will use a specific epistemic approach in which knowledge obtained from computational methods is related to interventions. The backbone of the present argument is to suggest that the combination of the functional and epistemic approaches to techno-scientific progress is more accurate both from a descriptive (historical) and normative point of view. It captures relevant episodes in the development of recent scientific disciplines. Scientific progress can be conceptualized in many ways, but in a functionalist vein, one can define it as an effective and efficient way of solving new and old problems: “science progresses just in case successive theories solve more problems than their predecessors” (Laudan 1981). The functionalist approach to progress adopted here retains the role of explanation in clarifying and solving problems in science, as well as it being part of the solution. What does it mean to solve a problem by numerical simulations? Here our approach follows the standard approach in the philosophy of science that considers numerical simulations as solutions to intractable problems (Humphreys 2009; Parker 2009; Winsberg 2010). Numerical simulations are typical problem-solving tools and from a functional point of view, we take them as a component of scientific progress. In respect of interventionism, we define an intervention as a change in the setup of a scientific experiment or observation. According to Bain, scientific progress can be identified with the accumulation of knowledge. We argue in this paper that the advance of knowledge those computational methods bring to science is interventionist in nature: without performing actual experiments computer simulations can inform scientists about possible interventions and their results. An intervention is defined here in a more pragmatic way, as an activity that enables the scientist to change both the initial conditions under which we gain information about a system and the rules (or laws) that govern such a system. This paper concludes with a discussion of two case studies. First, as a clear case of interventionist progress, we offer a short history of the Lazarus project. This project simulated a binary black hole exclusively based on numerical simulation (Baker, Campanelli, and Lousto 2002). The history of this project and its results are discussed in some detail both as a functionalist and interventionist techno-scientific progress. Second, as a case of functionalist techno-scientific progress, the DeepMind project called AlphaFold2 is a cluster of models that can predict the way a protein may fold in 3D when the input is the amino-acid sequence of the protein. It can compete with real experimental methods (X-ray crystallography or cryo-electron microscopy). The problem here (CASP=Critical Assessment of Structure Prediction) is a competition to predict spatial structures of proteins that have been solved using experimental methods, “but for which the structures have not been made public.” (Callaway 2022) In conclusion, we showed how the concept of ‘techno-scientific progress’ integrates (recent) history and the philosophy of science with the advancement in computational science.}, language = {1. Here our approach follows the standard approach in the philosophy of science that considers numerical simulations as solutions to intractable problems (Humphreys 2009; Parker 2009; Winsberg 2010). Numerical simulations are typical problem-solving tools and from a functional point of view, we take them as a component of scientific progress. In respect of interventionism, we define an intervention as a change in the setup of a scientific experiment or observation. According to Bain, scientific progress can be identified with the accumulation of knowledge. We argue in this paper that the advance of knowledge those computational methods bring to science is interventionist in nature: without performing actual experiments computer simulations can inform scientists about possible interventions and their results. An intervention is defined here in a more pragmatic way, as an activity that enables the scientist to change both the initial conditions under which we gain information about a system and the rules (or laws) that govern such a system. This paper concludes with a discussion of two case studies. First, as a clear case of interventionist progress, we offer a short history of the Lazarus project. This project simulated a binary black hole exclusively based on numerical simulation (Baker, Campanelli, and Lousto 2002). The history of this project and its results are discussed in some detail both as a functionalist and interventionist techno-scientific progress. Second, as a case of functionalist techno-scientific progress, the DeepMind project called AlphaFold2 is a cluster of models that can predict the way a protein may fold in 3D when the input is the amino-acid sequence of the protein. It can compete with real experimental methods (X-ray crystallography or cryo-electron microscopy). The problem here (CASP=Critical Assessment of Structure Prediction) is a competition to predict spatial structures of proteins that have been solved using experimental methods, “but for which the structures have not been made public.” (Callaway 2022) In conclusion, we showed how the concept of ‘techno-scientific progress’ integrates (recent) history and the philosophy of science with the advancement in computational science.

Carruthers) or a “high-level knowledge” as a epistemic competence (Sosa, Baehr). In a naturalistic vein, metacognition encodes better the epistemic humbleness of the scientific representation, a feature needed, as the argument goes, in humanism. When the accuracy of SR is complemented (and augmented) with a certain level of confidence in this representation, it is more rational to trust SR and less rational to adopt some form of denialism about SR. When SQ is in an eigenstate for some observable, it definitely has the value for that observable; when SQ is not in an eigenstate of an observable, it is indeterminate for each property whether it has the value of the observable. On some other interpretations (most notably, the Bohmian interpretation) there is no quantum indeterminacy. This paper explores an idea suggested in the literature, but not extensively: a relational concept of indeterminacy. In this specific case, we reconstruct indeterminacy as a determinable/determinate distinction of relational indeterminacy. As it is logically evident, such a distinction is available for monadic properties and for relations. (Wolff 2015) Moving from monadic predicates to n-place predicates can illuminate, as the arguments goes, interesting aspects of indeterminacy in which the interactions of a quantum system Sq play a major role in its determinate/indeterminate nature. On a strong reading of the present argument, relational indeterminacy can help reduce the intrinsic, monadic type of QMI, as discussed by the mainstream approach to indeterminacy. A less ambitious task is to accept two ways of talking about indeterminacy, and to suggest a research program in metaphysics on both and on their interconnectedness. One can open a conceptual space for relational quantum indeterminacy at least on these lines of thought: I-01 ‘Spatiotemporal QMI’: The relation of a quantum system SQ with spacetime structures entails the QMI of SQ: The quantum indeterminacy of SQ is conceptually dependent on the ‘indeterminacy’ of the spacetime structures (SPT) in which SQ evolves. Scientific revolutions, as well as everyday progress of science, depend on developing methods to deal with an increase in complexity of the information science processes: climate change, political and economic instability, devastating natural disasters, new challenges coming from emerging technologies, new data from particle accelerators, telescopes, the vast data from various ‘-omics’ disciplines, and ultimately the whole Internet as a vast source of information. The advancement of computational tools and the presence of massive amounts of data, called Big Data, became arguably part of the practice of some scientific disciplines in the three decades. The nature of scientific evidence and its logical and conceptual relations with hypotheses, theories, and models have been among the most enticing topics in the philosophy of science. The third refers to the capacity to learn constructively, and it is less related to skepticism: the agent can build new knowledge by recombining, eliminating, or ignoring previous pieces of knowledge. The focus is on Machine Learning techniques for building artificial agents. We use a form of probabilistic decision theory (also known as Bayesian statistics) to show that some Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, more specifically artificial neural networks used in Deep Learning, may display a specific form of rationality: for artificial agents, a working definition of ‘artificial rationality’ is provided. We delineate it from a concept of human rationality inspired by scientific reasoning based on some requirements: reasoning under data uncertainty, fallibilism (being able to represent its own limits), and active/corrective learning (when existing submodels are combined to create new knowledge or existing knowledge is divided into subdomains). The techniques that can instantiate these components of rationality are based on the idea of deleting, comparing, and combining models. The emphasis is here less on the internal links between principles and laws of the same domain, but on how principles of a domain relate ‘externally’ to laws and principles of other domains. This ‘principle externalism’ relies also on a relativized version of Lewis’ best systems approach due to Callender and Cohen, called the better best system. (2009,2011) Different domains trade in different natural kinds, but the emphasis here is on overlapping natural kinds and hence the possibility of “distributing” the top‐down explanations due to principles. Possible inter‐field roles of principles discussed here include: clashes of principles, principles constraining laws of other domains, or, on the contrary, principles enabling the hybridization or the even the unification of laws belonging to different domains. Are artificial, and autonomous moral agents possible even in principle? And if they are, in what sense are they fundamentally different than other artificial agents? Is computation the right tool to build moral agents with enough moral expertise and discern? If it is, what kind of computationalism is most likely to be realized by artificial moral agents? The central focus point of this paper is representation within artificial systems that implement computationally moral processes. The paper draws inspiration from recent debates about computation and representation, (G. Piccinini, Rescorla, O. Shagir) and depicts a case in which architectures used in artificial agents suggest a novel type of computation based. This paper argues for a form of computationalism applied to moral artificial agents, called “moral pattern computationalism,” similar in some respects to computational structuralism (advocated by Putnam, Chalmers, Copeland, Scheutz i.a.). The argument discounts the role of semantics plays in computation implemented in artificial moral agents and stresses the role of patterns in moral behavioral data. Is Big Data mining a proper method of discovering and building models? The focus is on discovery and building (rather than justification or confirmation) of existing theories or models; and on relevant epistemic and pragmatic aspects of these computational architectures (rather than on the quantitative features of Big Data). Two competing (or, more mildly put, complementing) types of models used in biology and cognitive science are scrutinized: mechanism modeling and computational modeling (mostly network modeling and dynamical modeling). This paper aims to show that far from becoming irrelevant in the Big Data era, network models and mechanisms can be discovered and built from Big Data. The argument is based on the concept of patterns in data, discussed in the context of the relation between data and models (Bogen, Woodward, McAllister). This paper proposes a new discussion on Big Data” as the primary source of model-building in science, when the computational architecture used is machine learning or evolutionary algorithms (and possibly a combination of them). Is Big Data mining a proper method of discovering and building models? The focus is on discovery and building (rather than justification or confirmation) of existing theories or models; and on relevant epistemic and pragmatic aspects of these computational architectures (rather than on the quantitative features of Big Data). Two competing (or, more mildly put, complementing) types of models used in biology and cognitive science are scrutinized: mechanism modeling and computational modeling (mostly network modeling and dynamical modeling). This paper aims to show that far from becoming irrelevant in the Big Data era, network models and mechanisms can be discovered and built from Big Data. The argument is based on the concept of patterns in data, discussed in the context of the relation between data and models (Bogen, Woodward, McAllister). It relates it then to the concept of “small patterns” in Big Data (Floridi) as hidden aspects of mechanistic models, hard to fathom by scientists. First, it discusses the lawhood of powerful generalizations in scientific disciplines dominated by Big Data, computational power, and numerical methods. Contrary to a common hype, it is argued here that laws of nature will have a role to play in the advancement of science after the so-called “fourth-paradigm” stage of science. Relying on data alone (be it Big Data, or small data) is not science: for epistemological reasons, it is argued here, we need laws of nature (and as others may argue: theories, models, causation, mechanisms) to advance in the 21st century: nevertheless, some of these concepts need to be refitted to match the challenges emerging after the 21st century “data turn.” The second part of the argument asks: which account of lawhood is suitable for the stage of data-driven, computational-intensive science? What means to be a law of nature when Big Data counts as your scientific evidence and computational tools (including numerical simulations, machine learning, discovery algorithms, data mining) are part and parcel of the scientific method? Most of the philosophical accounts of lawhood: deflationary views, governing views, and various ‘systems’ views: Mill-Ramsey-Lewis or Cohen’s and C. Callender’s ‘better best system’ (BBS) need to be amended to accommodate this type of empiricism about laws of nature. The version of the BBS proposed here can account for scenarios in which laws of nature are distilled from data through various computational techniques. This paper emphasizes that Big Data is not restricted to one discipline or to one representation and that the set of natural kinds that Big Data comes with transgresses our own aims and ways of dividing science. In the ‘bottom-up’ BBS discussed here, a prospective ‘correspondence’ between Big Data and the laws of nature is proffered: data is associated with the Humean mosaic, and hence laws are supervening on data, not directly on occurrent facts; patterns in data are related to generalizations and ‘natural’ patterns to laws of nature; natural kinds are not restricted to one scientific discipline, but emerge from data. Laws of nature are then defined by structures in large datasets and computational methods used to mining Big Data and distill laws from mere generalizations.
